Breast Implants: The Procedure

Breast implant surgery is used to improve the size and shape of a woman's breast by placing an implant under the pectoralis muscle or behind the breast tissue. The implant then pushes the breast tissue forward thereby increasing the volume of the breast and making the breast appear fuller. Breast implant surgery can be successful in increasing the size of small breasts (hypomastia), balancing out uneven breasts (asymmetry), reversing a reduction in breast size after pregnancy and as a reconstructive procedure after mastectomy.

Breast implant surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure in a hospital or surgical facility and usually requires a general anesthetic.
