Breast Augmentation: The Modern Era

The modern era of breast augmentation began in 1963 with the invention of silicone implants. Since then more than 900 different styles and types of breast implants have been introduced. Obviously, this can be a little confusing. A good first step to take after deciding that breast enhancement is right for you, is to determine the "look" you want. The best way to do this is to gather images of breasts that you find ideal and bring to your initial consultation. Photographs of beautiful breasts can be found on the internet or in magazines. Our website contains hundreds of before and after pictures. It is essential that you compare "apples to apples." That is, try to find bodies that are similar to you in size and build. The more closely they match you in the before picture, the more likely you are to achieve a similar outcome.

At your consultation, your breast measurements are taken. This helps guide what volume of implant will look natural on your frame. Although implants are most commonly used to augment breasts- they can also be used to correct subtle or dramatic differences in breast sizes. Each patient must be approached and treated individually.

Patients are able to try on implants in the office, by placing them into their bra. This helps to visualize the new volume and projection. There are three different "profiles" of implants-moderate profile, moderate plus and high profile. The difference is in the amount of projection or height the breast receives for the same volume of implant. For example, a 300cc high profile implant is more narrow and therefore can project two centimeters or more away from the chest than an equivalent 300cc moderate profile impant. I encourage my patients to take their time when trying on implants. The goal is to give a look that is harmoniously balanced with the patients hips, shoulders and buttocks.

A natural look is achieved when the size looks proportional to the rest of the patient's body.

When the implant is small compared to the pre-operative breast size, a saline implant can give a more natural looking result. When the implant is much bigger than the amount of natural breast tissue, this creates a rounder fuller breast. When this is preferred, a silicone implant tends to soften the feel of the breast. For this reason, many patients prefer the softer and more pliable feel of silicone.

When choosing between silicone and saline, it is important to note that with silicone implants an MRI is recommended every three years to ensure the implant is intact. In contrast with saline implants, MRI's are not needed. In the case of a rare rupture the implant will deflate releasing only harmless sterile saline (salt-water.) If you remain undecided at the time of the consultation, your surgeon can suggest what he or she feels is the best choice to achieve your specific goals.

Surgical materials and techniques continue to get safer and more reliable each year. With so many good options, it is a truly exciting time for a woman to be considering breast augmentation.
