Breast Augmentation: Forming a Beautiful Breast

Ultimately, it is the surgeon's planning, skill and experience that ensure success in the operating room. For the vast majority of my patients, I choose to approach the breast through a peri-areolar incision. The peri-areaolar incision is placed around the nipple-areola complex, along the edge of the darker skin known as the areola. Once healed, the scars fade and blend very well into the natural pigment of the areola. After several months, they become very hard to find, and often they are completely inconspicuous. The sutures are placed under the skin and are absorbable. Therefore, there are no stitch marks or any visible sutures to remove.

After the incision is made, I then proceed to make a "pocket" or space where the implants will lie. The implants are inserted and the pocket and implants give your breasts the volume that is desired. Now the breast is shaped to an aesthetic ideal. This is precisely where the surgeon's skill and artistic eye most come into play. I always sit the patient up, in the operating room to examine how the breasts will lie in their normal position. I can then make adjustments that affect how high or low the breasts are, how close together or how far apart, how much cleavage is present without a bra. I often ask my patients to bring in photos of models with their ideal breast shape and size. I reference these photos in the operating room as I am creating the patient's breast shape and contour. This allows me to tailor each operating to each patient's goals.
